John Park (born in February 1835 – died May 16, 1863) was a brave soldier from Derry, Ireland. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest and most important award for showing amazing courage against the enemy. This special medal is given to soldiers in the British Army and forces from Commonwealth countries.
Who Was John Park?
John Park was a sergeant in the 77th Regiment of the British Army. He was only 19 years old when he showed incredible bravery during the Crimean War. This war took place between 1853 and 1856. It involved Russia fighting against an alliance of countries, including Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire.
His Amazing Bravery
Sergeant Park showed great courage in several battles. He was especially brave during the Battle of the Alma on September 20, 1854, and at Inkerman on November 5, 1854. These battles happened in Crimea.
He also stood out on April 19, 1855. On that night, he helped capture the Russian Rifle Pits. During this attack, he was badly hurt. Even after being wounded, he continued to show strong determination. He was also noted for his bravery during two attacks on a place called the Redan.
Why He Got the Victoria Cross
John Park was given the Victoria Cross for his outstanding actions. His award citation mentioned his "conspicuous bravery" at the Battles of Alma and Inkerman. It also highlighted his courage during the attack on the Russian Rifle Pits. An officer named Colonel Egerton praised his bravery during that fight. The citation also noted his "determined resolution" during both attacks on the Redan.
His Later Life
Sadly, John Park died in Allahabad, India, on May 16, 1863. He passed away from sunstroke, which is a severe illness caused by too much heat.
