The John Paul Jones Cottage Museum is a special place located on the Arbigland Estate. This estate is near Kirkbean in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The museum is set up in the very cottage where John Paul Jones was born in 1747.
John Paul Jones was a famous naval hero. He played a big role in the American Revolutionary War. He is also known as one of the people who helped start the United States Navy. His father worked as a gardener on the Arbigland Estate.
The museum is usually open from April to September. Inside, the cottage has been made to look just like it did in 1747. You can listen to audio stories that tell you about life in the cottage back then. There's also a copy of a ship's cabin from John Paul Jones' ship, the Bonhomme Richard. You can learn about his important victory against HMS Serapis during the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779. The visitor center also has videos and displays about his life and amazing naval career.
Two retired admirals, Jerauld Wright from the U.S. Navy and Sir Nigel Henderson from the British Royal Navy, led the effort to restore the cottage. They wanted to make sure John Paul Jones' birthplace looked just as it did when he was born. The museum first opened its doors in 1993.
