Early Life and Education
John Proby was the son of John Proby, who lived at Elton Hall in Huntingdonshire. His mother was Jane, the daughter of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower. John Proby went to college at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Serving in Parliament
In 1747, John Proby became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Stamford. He held this position until 1754. After that, he represented Huntingdonshire in Parliament from 1754 to 1768.
Important Government Roles
John Proby also served as a Lord of the Admiralty. This meant he helped manage the British Navy. He held this role twice: first in 1757 and then again from 1763 to 1765.
Special Honors and Titles
In 1752, John Proby received a special title. He was made Baron Carysfort in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a Lord. In 1758, he joined the Irish Privy Council, a group of important advisors to the King. He received another great honor in 1761 when he was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath.
Later Life and Legacy
Lord Carysfort passed away in October 1772 when he was 51 years old. His son, also named John, took over his title. This son later became the Earl of Carysfort in 1789. Lord Carysfort's wife died in March 1783.
Two ships of the Royal Navy were named in his honor. The first was HMS Carysfort (1766), launched in 1766. Much later, in 1941, HMS Carysfort (R25) was also named after him.
Family Life
John Proby married Elizabeth Allen in 1750. She was the daughter of Joshua Allen, 2nd Viscount Allen. John and Elizabeth had two children: a son and a daughter. Their daughter, Elizabeth (1752–1808), later married Thomas John Storer.
