John W. Rhoden was an American sculptor. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and lived from 1918 to 2001. A sculptor is an artist who creates art by shaping materials. Rhoden moved to New York in 1938. There, he started learning from another artist named Richmond Barthé.

John Rhoden made sculptures using wood and bronze. He created many famous artworks for different places. Some of his well-known pieces include Untitled (Family) at Harlem Hospital Center. He also made a sculpture of Frederick Douglass at Lincoln University.

John Rhoden's Early Life and Training

John Rhoden served in World War II. After the war, he continued his art education. He studied at the School of Painting and Sculpture at Columbia University. There, he learned from famous artists like William Zorach and Hugo Robus.

Fellowships and Travel

Rhoden received special awards to help him study and travel. In 1951, he became a Fulbright Fellow. This allowed him to study art in other countries. The next year, in 1952, he won a Rome Prize Fellowship. This award let him study at the American Academy in Rome in Italy.

In 1956, John Rhoden joined a group of artists. They traveled to countries like the Soviet Union and Poland. This trip was supported by a special grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Art Around the World

After his travels, the Rhodens returned to New York City in 1960. Soon after, John Rhoden went to Indonesia. He received another grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. From 1961 to 1963, he helped set up a bronze foundry there. A foundry is a place where metal is melted and shaped into sculptures.
