John Roy Stewart wrote poems in both Gaelic (the traditional language of Scotland) and English.

Stewart was born in 1700 in a place called Strathspey, Scotland. His father, Donald, was a farmer who made sure John got a good education. This helped him join a Scottish army regiment, which was a group of soldiers. At that time, his regiment was serving far away in a country called Flanders.

A Poet of War

Besides being a soldier, John Roy Stewart was also a gifted poet. He wrote about the events and feelings of his time, especially about the Jacobite Rising. His poems are still remembered today.

Two of his most famous poems are:

  • "Lament for Lady Macintosh"
  • “The Day of Culloden” (which is called "Latha Chul-Lodair" in Gaelic)

These poems help us understand the history and emotions of the people who lived during the Jacobite Rising. John Roy Stewart passed away in 1752, but his legacy as both a soldier and a poet lives on.
