John Smythe Richardson (born February 29, 1828 – died February 24, 1894) was an important politician from South Carolina. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he helped make laws for the entire country.

John Smythe Richardson was born on a large farm called Bloomhill plantation. This farm was located near a town called Sumter, South Carolina. He grew up in South Carolina and later became a lawyer and a politician.

Early Life and Learning

John Richardson went to school in Cokesbury, South Carolina. After that, he studied law at the South Carolina College. Today, this school is known as the University of South Carolina. He finished his studies in 1850. Two years later, in 1852, he became a lawyer. He then started his law practice in his hometown of Sumter.

Serving During the Civil War

During the Civil War, John Richardson joined the Confederate States Army. He started as a captain in the infantry, which means he led soldiers on foot. Later, he was promoted to a higher role called adjutant for the Twenty-third Regiment, South Carolina Infantry. He continued to serve in the army until the war ended in 1865.

A Career in Politics

After the Civil War, John Richardson became involved in politics. From 1865 to 1867, he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. This is where state laws are made. In 1866, he was chosen to help South Carolina get land from the U.S. Congress. This land was meant to help the state.

He also attended a big meeting called the 1876 Democratic National Convention. At this meeting, the Democratic Party chose its candidate for president.

John Richardson was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This is part of the U.S. Congress, where laws for the whole country are made. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served two terms in Congress, from March 4, 1879, to March 3, 1883. During this time, he represented the people of South Carolina.

After his time in Congress, John Richardson continued to work in Sumter County. He passed away at his home, "Shadyside," near Sumter, South Carolina, on February 24, 1894. He was buried in the Sumter Cemetery.
