John Scrymgeour, 1st Earl of Dundee facts for kids
John Scrymgeour, 3rd Viscount Dudhope and 1st Earl of Dundee (died 1668) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was known for fighting in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, a series of conflicts in Scotland, England, and Ireland during the 1600s.

A Supporter of the King
John Scrymgeour was a strong supporter of the king during the civil war in Scotland. This war was part of the bigger Wars of the Three Kingdoms. In 1648, he joined forces with other royalist leaders. Their goal was to help King Charles I.
The Battle of Preston
Scrymgeour commanded a group of horse soldiers at the Battle of Preston. This was a major fight where the royalists were defeated. After the battle, he managed to escape safely back to Scotland.
Loyalty to Charles II
In 1651, Scrymgeour was with King Charles II at Stirling Castle. He marched with the king's army into England. This journey ended at the battle of Worcester, another big defeat for the royalists. John Scrymgeour once again escaped without harm.
Capture and Release
Later, in 1654, he joined another royalist effort in the north. However, he was captured by soldiers from Oliver Cromwell's army in a place called the braes of Angus. He was sent to London as a prisoner and held there for some time.
Rewards for Loyalty
When the monarchy was brought back to power in 1660, this event was called the Restoration. John Scrymgeour's loyalty to the king was rewarded. He became a privy councillor, which meant he was a trusted advisor to the king. On September 8, 1660, he was given the special title of Earl of Dundee. John Scrymgeour died on June 23, 1668.
