John Shelley (ジョン・シェリー) is a British illustrator. He is well-known for his amazing artwork, especially in Japan.

John Shelley: An Illustrator's Journey
John Shelley was born in 1959. He grew up in a place called Sutton Coldfield in England. He loved art and decided to study illustration. He went to Bournville School of Art and then Manchester Polytechnic. There, he learned from a famous illustrator named Tony Ross.
Early Success in Books
John Shelley's first children's picture book was The Secret in the Matchbox. It was published in 1989. This book was very popular! It was nominated for the Mother Goose Award in the UK. It also won a Parents' Choice Award in the US. This showed everyone how talented he was.
Working in Japan
From 1987 to 2008, John Shelley lived in Tokyo, Japan. He became very famous there. He created many posters for Parco, a big fashion store. He also made animated TV commercials for Mitsubishi Estate Co.
His work in Japan won him several awards. He received a Dentsu Ad Award in 1991 for a Suntory Whisky ad. In 1993, he won a Nikkei Environmental Ad Award. From 2000 to 2007, he was the Vice Chairman of a group called the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA).

In 2002, a fun comic character he created, named "Brat," became popular in Japan. You could find "Brat" on clothes and as collector's figures. There was even a "Brat" web comic online!
John Shelley returned to the UK in 2008 due to personal reasons. He now lives in Norfolk, England.
