John M Shifflett (born March 22, 1953 – died April 27, 2017) was an American Jazz musician. He was known for playing the Double bass, which is a very large string instrument. John Shifflett was also an arranger, a composer, and an educator. He taught music at San Jose State University.
Early Life and Musical Journey
John Shifflett was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1953. He loved music from a young age. He went to Iowa State University and graduated in 1976.
College Music Experience
Later, John studied at the University of Iowa. While there, he played the bass in the university's big band. A big band is a large group of musicians who play jazz music. He also played in the university's jazz combo. A jazz combo is a smaller group of jazz musicians. John performed at important events like the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festivals in 1979 and 1980. These experiences helped him become a skilled jazz musician.
