John Sinclair (born February 14, 1632 – died July 13, 1666) was a Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Lord Herdmanston during the 17th century. He was an important figure in Scottish history, especially during a time of big changes in the country.

A Young Nobleman's Life
John Sinclair was born on February 14, 1632. He was the oldest son of John Sinclair, who was the 22nd Lord Herdmanston, and his mother, Elizabeth Sinclair. John had several brothers. These included William St Clair, Robert St Clair, George St Clair, and Dr. Matthew St Clair.
His family was well-known in Scotland. His grandparents were Sir John Sinclair, the 21st Lord Herdmanston, and Mary Richardson. Through his brother Matthew, John was also an uncle to Charles St Clair of Herdmanston. Charles later became a de jure Lord Sinclair.
A Challenging Career
John Sinclair lived during a time of conflict in Scotland and England. He was involved in some important historical events.
Captured in Battle
In 1651, John St Clair fought in the Battle of Worcester. This was a major battle during the English Civil War. Unfortunately, he was captured during this battle. Being taken prisoner was a serious event for a nobleman at that time.
Exempted from an Act
After the battle, Oliver Cromwell, who was a powerful leader, passed something called "Cromwell's Act of Grace." This act offered forgiveness to many people who had fought against him. However, John St Clair was specifically exempted from this act. This means he did not receive the same forgiveness as others.
Family and Personal Life
John Sinclair married his distant cousin, Catherine Sinclair. She was the only child and heiress of John Sinclair, 10th Lord Sinclair. Her mother was Lady Mary Wemyss.
John's Children
John and Catherine had three children together:
- Henry St Clair (1660–1723): He was the oldest son and later became the 11th Lord Sinclair.
- John Sinclair (1663–around 1687)
- Mary Sinclair (1666–around 1721): She married a merchant named George Wilson from Edinburgh.
John Sinclair passed away on July 13, 1666. He was buried at Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Later Generations
Through his son Henry, John Sinclair had grandchildren. One grandson was John St Clair, Master of Sinclair (1683–1750). Another grandson was James St Clair (died 1762). These family members continued the Sinclair line.
