John Stewart of Minto facts for kids
Sir John Stewart of Minto (born around 1525, died 1583) was an important Scottish nobleman. He served as the Provost of Glasgow, a key leader for the city. His family came from Minto in the Scottish Borders. His father, Robert Stewart, was also a Provost of Glasgow.

Sir John Stewart: A Leader in Glasgow
Sir John Stewart was the Provost of Glasgow from 1565 to 1573. The Provost was like the mayor of the city, responsible for its daily running and representing its people. His uncle, John Stewart, had also been a Provost of Glasgow earlier, in 1543 and 1544.
Knighted by Mary, Queen of Scots
Sir John was given the special title of a knight by Mary, Queen of Scots. This happened at Holyrood Palace on February 8, 1562. It was a big celebration during the wedding of the Queen's half-brother, Lord James Stewart, and Agnes Keith. Being knighted was a great honor, showing he was a trusted and brave person.
Important Events and Roles
In 1567, Sir John Stewart was invited to a very important event: the coronation of King James VI at Stirling. This shows he was a senior and respected politician in Scotland at the time.
Later, in May 1570, he showed his loyalty and bravery. He successfully defended Glasgow Castle against the Hamilton family. The Hamiltons were supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was no longer on the throne.
Sir John Stewart died in 1583. He is buried with other members of his family under a special brass plaque on the floor of Glasgow Cathedral.
Family Life
Sir John Stewart was married twice. His first wife was Joanna Hepburn.
His second wife was Margaret Stewart (1539–1577). She was the daughter of James Stewart of Cardonald. Together, they had several children:
- Matthew Stewart of Minto: He also became a very important leader in Glasgow, serving as the Lord Provost four times. He married Jonet Stewart.
- Walter Stewart, 1st Lord Blantyre: He became the first Lord Blantyre and passed away in 1617.
- Marion Stewart: She married William Clelland of Clelland.
- Janet Stewart (1548–1613): She married Archibald Stewart of Castlemilk.
- Agnes Stewart: She married John Wallace of Auchans.
