The John Tangeman House is a special old house in Wyoming, Ohio, United States. It's known as the best example of its style in the city. A rich factory owner once lived here. Today, it's recognized as a historic site.

What Makes the House Special?

The Tangeman House is the best example of Italianate style in Wyoming. This style was popular before the American Civil War. The house is made of brick and sits on a strong stone base. It has two stories and an asphalt roof.

The front of the house has a big porch. This porch covers the main entrance and the rest of the front. The roof edges have fancy brickwork called corbelling. There are two chimneys near the middle of the roof. The roof has a sloped, pyramid-like shape, known as a hip roof. The porch has special pillars with cut-off corners, fancy designs, and arches with detailed crisscross patterns.

Why Wyoming Grew So Much

Wyoming became a busy and successful place because it had good ways to travel. An old road connected Cincinnati to places like Fort Hamilton. In 1806, parts of this road were straightened. Today, this new road is Springfield Pike in central Wyoming.

In the 1830s, another important way to travel appeared. The Miami and Erie Canal was built nearby in 1828. A town called Lockland grew up next to the canal. Later, in 1851, trains came to the area. The Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad was built between Lockland and Wyoming.

Because Wyoming was close to Lockland's factories and had easy travel to Cincinnati, many rich business owners moved there. They bought farms and built large country homes. Most of these homes were in the Wyoming Hills area. This growth continued until the Great Depression in the 1930s.

John Tangeman owned the Tangeman Paper Company in Lockland. He was one of the first business owners to build a house in Wyoming. He lived in this house for over thirty years. He moved in when it was finished in 1857 and stayed until at least 1891.

Becoming a Historic Site

In 1979, a local group that works to save old buildings started looking for historic places in Wyoming. This project led to many houses being recognized as important. In 1985, eighteen houses, the Wyoming Presbyterian Church, and one historic area were suggested for the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. In 1986, the Tangeman House was added to this list. It was chosen because of its special architecture and its connection to John Tangeman.
