John Walter Jones (born April 14, 1878 – died March 31, 1954) was an important politician and farmer from Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was a scientist who studied farming, called an agronomist. He helped bring the potato crop to the island. Potatoes became a very important part of the island's economy. In 1935, he was named the best farmer in the province. He even received the King George V medal for his work.

John Walter Jones: Early Life and Career
John Walter Jones was born in Pownal. He first tried to become a politician in 1921. He ran in a federal election as a candidate for the Farmer-Progressive Party. However, he did not win a seat in the House of Commons of Canada.
Becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly
In 1935, John Walter Jones was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. He was a member of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party. This was his first big step in provincial politics.
Leading Prince Edward Island
In 1943, John Walter Jones became the 20th Premier of the province. He took over after Thane A. Campbell became the Chief Justice of the PEI Supreme Court. People often called him "Farmer Jones."
Key Decisions as Premier
As Premier, John Walter Jones made several important changes.
- His government changed the rules about selling alcohol. They created the PEI Liquor Control Commission to manage it.
- In 1947, his government helped resolve a worker dispute at a meat-packing plant called Canada Packers. They took control of the plant and brought in new workers. They also made rules about workers joining national unions. This was done to protect the interests of farmers.
Moving to the Senate
In 1953, John Walter Jones left politics in Prince Edward Island. He accepted a new role in the Senate of Canada. He served as a Senator for Queen's, Prince Edward Island. He passed away on March 31, 1954.
