John Henry St Pierre, also known as John War Eagle, was an actor from the Yankton Sioux tribe. He appeared in many films and TV shows. He was born on September 24, 1901, in Wagner, South Dakota. He grew up on the Yankton Indian Reservation.
Acting Career
John War Eagle acted in movies and television shows from 1932 to 1977. He was sometimes called Chief John War Eagle, Chief John Eagle, or John Wareagle in his roles. He appeared in 28 films and 26 TV shows. Many of his movie roles were small parts.
Famous Roles
John War Eagle played important historical figures. He acted as Red Cloud in the 1951 western film Tomahawk. He played Red Cloud again in the 1953 film The Great Sioux Uprising.
He also played Chief Sitting Bull in the Disney movie Tonka (1958). This was a family-friendly adventure film. It told the story of a young Sioux boy trying to train a wild horse.
War Eagle also appeared in other Disney films. He was Wolf's Brother in Westward Ho, the Wagons! (1956). He also played Chief Iron Hand in a 1960 episode of the TV western series Wagon Train.
