John Yenn RA (1750–1821) was an important English architect who lived in the 1700s and early 1800s. He was known for his work on grand buildings and his role at the Royal Academy.

John Yenn's Early Life and Training

John Yenn was born on March 8, 1750. He began his studies at the Royal Academy in September 1769. This was a big step for anyone wanting to become a successful artist or architect.

His talent was quickly recognized. In 1774, he was chosen as an associate of the academy. Later, in 1791, he became a full academician. This meant he was a highly respected member of the art community. From 1796 to 1820, he also served as the treasurer of the Royal Academy.

Important Buildings and Roles

John Yenn learned a lot from his teacher, Sir William Chambers. Chambers was a very famous architect himself. Yenn took over many of Chambers' important jobs.

In the late 1770s, Yenn became the main architect for the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace. This is a huge and famous country house. One of his notable designs there was the "Temple of Health" in 1789. This small temple was built to celebrate George III getting better after an illness. It featured the Corinthian order, a fancy style of ancient Greek architecture.

Yenn also worked on other buildings nearby. In 1783, he added a new section to the church in Woodstock. This shows his skill in designing different types of structures.

Thanks to William Chambers, Yenn got many other important positions. In 1780, he became the Clerk of the Works at Richmond Park. This role meant he was in charge of building and maintenance. He later held the same job at Kensington Palace, Buckingham House, and the Royal Mews. These were all important royal buildings.
