The John the Baptist Monument is a very tall statue in San Juan de los Morros, Guárico state, Venezuela. It stands 19.8 meters (about 62 feet) high and is made of concrete. People often call it San Juanote. It is one of the tallest statues in all of Venezuela.
This impressive monument honors John the Baptist. It was built between 1933 and 1935. A former Venezuelan leader, Juan Vicente Gómez, ordered its construction. He wanted to give it as a gift to the city. This happened when San Juan de los Morros became the capital of Guárico State. The statue was first carved near Calabozo. Then, it was moved to San Juan in 1935.
Where is the Monument Located?
The San Juanote monument is in a special part of Venezuela. This area connects the lower parts of the central Venezuelan Coastal Range mountains. It also meets the flat lands known as the Venezuelan Llanos.
The statue sits on top of a small hill called El Calvario. This hill is right in the middle of San Juan de los Morros city. Around the statue, you can see concrete lions. There are also old cannons. They look like they are guarding the monument.
