College Football Hall of Fame

Johnnie Johnson, born on October 8, 1956, is a former American football player. He played as a cornerback and safety in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons in the 1980s. Before joining the NFL, Johnnie was a star player for the University of Texas. He was even named an Unanimous All-American twice, which means he was one of the best college players in the country.

The Los Angeles Rams picked him in the first round of the 1980 NFL draft. He played professionally for the Rams and the Seattle Seahawks. Johnnie Johnson was honored by being chosen for the College Football Hall of Fame in May 2007. His son, Collin Johnson, also plays professional football as a wide receiver for the Chicago Bears.

College Football Career

Johnnie Johnson played college football for the University of Texas Longhorns. During his last three seasons, his team was one of the top ten in the nation for defense. This means they were very good at stopping other teams from scoring.

Johnnie was also excellent at special teams. He was a specialist at returning punts, which is when a player catches a kicked ball and runs it back. Many of his punt return records still stand at the University of Texas.

Early College Success

In his first year, Johnnie started his very first game. However, a leg injury kept him from playing much of that season. The next year, he became a starter again. His team went undefeated during the regular season. In one important game against Oklahoma, his tackle on fourth down saved the win for Texas. That year, he earned the first of his three All-Southwest Conference honors. In 1978, Johnnie was named the best defensive back in the nation.

Professional Football Career

The Los Angeles Rams chose Johnnie Johnson in the first round of the 1980 NFL draft. He was the 17th player picked overall. He signed a contract with the Rams and began his professional career.

Rams Records and Highlights

Johnnie holds a special record for the Rams. He made the longest interception return in the team's history. This happened in 1980 when he caught a pass from the Green Bay Packers and ran it back 99 yards for a touchdown.
