Johnny Washington, born on May 6, 1984, is a former professional baseball player. He used to play as an infielder. Today, he is a hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels. This team is part of Major League Baseball (MLB). Johnny grew up in Long Beach, California. When he played, he was a second baseman or shortstop. He threw and batted with his right hand. Playing Days and Early Career
Johnny went to Mt. San Jacinto College. In 2003, the Texas Rangers baseball team chose him. They picked him in the 27th round of the MLB draft. He then played baseball for seven seasons. He played in Minor League Baseball (MiLB). He also played in independent leagues.
Becoming a Coach
Johnny stopped playing baseball in 2009. After that, the Los Angeles Dodgers hired him. He became a coach for their MiLB teams. He coached the Ogden Raptors first. In 2013, he coached for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Then, in 2014, he coached the Great Lakes Loons.
Coaching in Major League Baseball
Johnny joined the San Diego Padres team in 2016. He coached for their minor league team, the San Antonio Missions. The Padres then hired him for their main MLB team. He became their first base coach before the 2017 season. For the 2019 season, he was named the Padres' hitting coach.
After the 2019 season, Johnny interviewed for a manager job. This was with the Los Angeles Angels.
In 2021, Johnny became a hitting coach for the Hanwha Eagles. This team plays in the KBO League in South Korea. On December 13, 2021, the Chicago Cubs hired him. He worked as their assistant hitting coach for the 2022 season. He continued in this role through 2023.
On November 18, 2023, the Los Angeles Angels named Johnny Washington as their hitting coach. He has been with the Angels since the start of the 2024 season.
