Johnsburg has a rich history, especially tied to its church. The community was first settled by families looking for a new home.
The Founding of the Community
The first six families who settled here founded a church in 1841. This church was very important to the early settlers. When it was built in 1842, it was the first church for about 100 miles (160 kilometers) around. This was a huge area between Milwaukee and Green Bay.
How Johnsburg Got Its Name
The community was first called Hinesburg. This name came from the church, which was known as St. Johannes Gemeinde (St. John's congregation). A priest named Father Deisenrieder helped set up a post office here. The town's first official name honored his birthplace in Bavaria, a region in Germany. Later, in 1885, the United States Postal Service changed its rules. Because of this, the community was renamed "Johnsburg," which is still its name today.
