Calumet is a town in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. In 2000, about 1,514 people lived there. Many small communities are located within the town, including Artesia Beach, Calumet Harbor, Garnet, Highland Park, Johnsburg, Laudolff Beach, Marytown, Pipe, Pukwana Beach, Winnebago Heights, and Winnebago Park. Part of Calumetville is also in the town.

There is also a county in Wisconsin called Calumet County, which is right next to this town.

History of Calumet

The area where Calumet is located was first mapped out in 1834 and 1835. The very first settlement in the town was near a place called Pipe in 1837. The town of Calumet was officially set up on March 8, 1839. It was then reorganized a few years later in 1842. A flour mill, which grinds grain into flour, was built near Pipe in 1854.

Geography and Land

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Calumet covers a total area of 44.1 square miles (114.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 30.2 square miles (78.2 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 13.9 square miles (36.0 square kilometers), is water. This means that about 31.55% of the town's total area is covered by water.

In 2000, a census counted 1,514 people living in Calumet. There were 562 households and 423 families. The town had about 50.2 people living in each square mile (19.4 people per square kilometer). There were also 774 housing units, which are places where people live.

Most of the people in the town were White (98.35%). A small number were African American (0.13%), Native American (0.73%), or Asian (0.20%). Some people were from other races or had mixed racial backgrounds. About 0.99% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

About 29.9% of the households had children under 18 living with them. Most households (67.3%) were married couples living together. The average household had about 2.61 people, and the average family had about 3.03 people.

Economy and Jobs

In 2007, a large project called the Blue Sky Green Field Wind Farm was built across the town. This wind farm, which uses wind turbines to create electricity, officially started operating in May 2008. It helps produce clean energy for the area.
