Johnson County War facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Johnson County War, also known as the War on Powder River or the Wyoming Range War, was a big fight over land in Johnson County, Wyoming. It happened between 1889 and 1893. The trouble started when large cattle companies began accusing smaller ranchers and settlers of stealing cattle. Many of these settlers were just trying to make a living and needed land, water, and space for their own animals, which put them in competition with the big ranchers.

As things got very tense between the big, established ranchers and the smaller settlers, the fighting reached its peak in the Powder River Country. The large ranchers hired armed men to go into the county. When these armed men arrived, the local farmers, ranchers, and even the police got very upset. They gathered a group of about 200 men to stop them, leading to a tense standoff. The standoff ended when the United States Cavalry (the US Army), sent by President Benjamin Harrison, arrived to separate the two groups. However, some fighting continued in the months that followed. This event has since become a famous and important story from the Wild West, and its story, especially about the conflict between rich and poor, has inspired many books, movies, and TV shows about the Western genre.

What Was the Johnson County War?

The Johnson County War was a serious conflict that happened in Wyoming. It was mainly a fight between very large cattle ranches and smaller ranchers or settlers. The big ranches felt that the smaller ones were taking their land and cattle. This led to a lot of anger and eventually, violence.

Why Did the Conflict Start?

The main reason for the war was competition over land and resources.

  • Land and Water: Wyoming was growing, and more people were moving there. Big ranchers had been there for a while and had a lot of land. New settlers wanted their own land for farming and raising their own animals.
  • Cattle Theft Accusations: The large cattle companies accused the smaller settlers of being "rustlers," which means cattle thieves. They believed these smaller ranchers were stealing their cows. However, many settlers said they were innocent and just trying to make a living.
  • Control and Power: The big ranchers wanted to control the land and the cattle business. They saw the new settlers as a threat to their power and way of life.

The Big Fight: Invasion and Standoff

The tensions grew so high that the big ranchers decided to take extreme action.

  • The Invaders: In 1892, the large ranchers hired a group of armed men, sometimes called "regulators," to go into Johnson County. Their goal was to remove the settlers they believed were rustlers.
  • The Posse Forms: When these armed men arrived, the local sheriff and many citizens formed a "posse" (a group of people helping the police) to stop them. This posse grew to about 200 men.
  • The Siege at the TA Ranch: The armed men hired by the ranchers ended up trapped at the TA Ranch. The posse surrounded them, leading to a tense standoff that lasted for several days.

How the War Ended

The standoff at the TA Ranch was a very serious situation.

  • President Harrison Steps In: News of the conflict reached the President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. He ordered the United States Cavalry (the US Army) to go to Johnson County to stop the fighting.
  • Army Arrives: The soldiers arrived and separated the two groups, ending the siege. The armed men were arrested.
  • Aftermath: Even though the main standoff ended, tensions and smaller conflicts continued for some time. The Johnson County War showed the deep divisions between different groups of people in the American West.

Legacy of the War

The Johnson County War became a very important story in the history of the Wild West.

  • A Famous Story: It's one of the most well-known "range wars," which are conflicts over land and cattle.
