History of Johnston
Johnston is known as "The Hub of the Ridge." This is because it is located where three different river systems begin, flowing away from a fertile plateau. This plateau, called "the Ridge," is about 30 miles (48 km) long. It sits between clay hills to the north and sand hills to the south. People have lived in this area since the mid-1700s.
In 1791, George Washington, who was the first President of the United States, traveled through this area. He stopped at the Lott family plantation, which was just east of where Johnston is today.
How Johnston Got Its Name
In the late 1860s, a railroad called the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad was expanding. It was building tracks westward from Columbia to Augusta. A doctor named Edward Jones Mims convinced William Johnston, who was the president of the railroad, to build the tracks through his 1,200-acre (485-hectare) plantation. In return, Dr. Mims agreed to name the new town after Mr. Johnston.
The Peach Capital
In the early 1900s, growing peaches became very successful in this region. Today, the Ridge area produces about 60 percent of all the peaches grown in South Carolina! This is why Johnston proudly calls itself the "Peach Capital of the World."
