Johnston City is a small city in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 3,348 people lived there. Long ago, in the early 1900s, it was a busy place for coal mining. Many people moved here from Europe to work in the mines. The city's population was highest in the 1920s.
History of Johnston City
Johnston City has an interesting history, especially with coal mining. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many people came from countries like Italy and Wales to work in the coal mines. These new workers helped the city grow.
Sometimes, there were disagreements among the different groups of miners. This happened especially when miners went on strike to ask for better pay and working conditions.
Over time, coal mining became less common. This meant fewer jobs were available in Johnston City. Because of this, the number of people living in the city slowly went down. By 1940, the population was just under 4,000 people.
