Jolo (pronounced "Joe-Lowe") is a small place in McDowell County, West Virginia, in the United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Jolo is located along West Virginia Route 83.
Jolo has been mentioned in books and novels. For example, it appeared in the book Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington. It was also mentioned in the 2008 novel Final Theory.
How Jolo Got Its Name
The name "Jolo" has an interesting story! It comes from the son of the first postmaster in the area, a man named John Crockett Lowe.
Crockett Lowe was in charge of a small post office that was connected to the main post office in Bradshaw. Mail often got mixed up because of this. To fix the problem, the United States Post Office decided that the smaller post office needed its own unique name.
The US Post Office asked Crockett Lowe to suggest some names. He was watching his son, Joe, playing in the yard with a friend named Bogle Day. Crockett thought about their names and came up with two ideas: Jolo and Boda. He sent both names to the US Post Office, and they chose "Jolo." The post office in Jolo is still open today!
