Jonathan T. Capehart (born July 2, 1967) is an American journalist and TV commentator. He is known for his work with The Washington Post and MSNBC. Capehart writes for the PostPartisan blog and hosts The Saturday/Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.

Early Life and Education

Jonathan Capehart grew up in Hazlet, New Jersey. He was the third of four children. His father passed away when Jonathan was young. When he was 16, his family moved to Newark, New Jersey. He attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School there.

Capehart later went to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. His main subject was political science.

Before joining The Washington Post and MSNBC, Jonathan Capehart worked for NBC's The Today Show. He was a researcher for the popular morning program.

Work at the New York Daily News

Capehart joined the New York Daily News in 1993. He became a member of its editorial board. At that time, he was the youngest person ever to join the newspaper's editorial board. He worked there until 2000.

In 2000, Capehart left the Daily News to work at Bloomberg News. He also advised Michael Bloomberg during his campaign for New York City mayor in 2001. Capehart helped write speeches for Bloomberg.

He returned to the New York Daily News in 2002. He served as the deputy editor of the editorial page until 2004. In December 2004, Capehart joined Hill & Knowlton. This is a global public relations company. He worked as a Senior Vice President there.

Joining The Washington Post and MSNBC

Capehart became a journalist at The Washington Post in 2007. He also joined its editorial board. He still works for The Washington Post today. He became an associate editor of the newspaper in March 2022.

He is also a contributing commentator for MSNBC. He hosts a podcast called Cape Up. In this podcast, he talks to important people. They discuss topics like race, religion, age, gender, and cultural identity in politics.

Capehart began guest hosting a radio show in 2018. It was called Midday on WNYC. He started hosting The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart on MSNBC in December 2020. In February 2023, his show expanded. It became The Saturday/Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart. He also sometimes fills in as host for The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell.

Since January 2021, Capehart has been a political commentator. He appears on the PBS NewsHour every Friday.

Personal Life

Jonathan Capehart married Nick Schmit on January 7, 2017. Nick Schmit was an assistant chief of protocol at the State Department. Their wedding was officiated by former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder.

In 1999, Capehart was a key contributor to a project. It was a series of editorials for the New York Daily News. These editorials criticized how the Harlem's Apollo Theater was managed financially. For this work, the New York Daily News staff received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing.
