Jonny William Flynn (born February 6, 1989) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a point guard, a player who leads the team's offense. Flynn played for three years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He also played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange team. His last team was Orlandina Basket in Italy.

High School Basketball Success

Jonny Flynn played high school basketball at Niagara Falls High School in New York. In 2005, his team won both the New York state public high school and federation championships. This was a big achievement for his team.

After his senior year, Flynn was named Mr. New York Basketball. This award goes to the best high school basketball player in New York State. When he graduated in 2007, he was considered one of the top basketball players in the country. He was ranked highly by scouting services like Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Flynn was also chosen as a 2007 McDonald's All-American. This means he was one of the best high school players in the entire United States. He also played for the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team. This team competed against a World Select Team in an event called the Nike Hoop Summit.

College Career at Syracuse

Jonny Flynn played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange team. He quickly made a name for himself.

Freshman Year Highlights (2007–08)

In his very first college game on November 12, 2007, Flynn scored 28 points. This was a new record for a freshman player at Syracuse, beating the previous record held by famous player Carmelo Anthony. He scored 28 points again later that season against Pittsburgh.

Flynn had a great first year, averaging 15.7 points and 5.3 assists per game. He was even named co-Big East Rookie of the Year. He and another freshman, Donté Greene, were one of the highest-scoring freshman duos in the country.

Sophomore Year Success (2008–09)

Before his second season, Flynn was named to the preseason All-Big East team. He started the season strong with 27 points against Richmond. A week later, he scored 25 points and made a game-winning shot against the No. 23 ranked Kansas team. Syracuse won in overtime, and Flynn was named the MVP of that tournament.

Flynn showed off his amazing jumping ability in a game against Rutgers. He made a powerful dunk over an opposing player.

Big East Tournament MVP

In the 2009 Big East men's basketball tournament, Flynn led Syracuse to an incredible 127–117 win against Connecticut. This game went into six overtimes! Flynn played for 67 out of 70 minutes, scoring 34 points and making all 16 of his free throws.

The next day, he played all 45 minutes of another overtime win against West Virginia. Even though Syracuse lost the championship game to Louisville, Flynn was named the tournament's MVP. This was a rare honor for a player on the losing team.

NCAA Tournament Performance

In his first NCAA tournament game in 2009, Flynn scored 16 points and had 7 assists. Syracuse won and moved on to the next round. He helped Syracuse reach the "Sweet Sixteen" for the first time since 2004.

On April 9, 2009, Flynn announced he would enter the 2009 NBA draft. He later decided to leave college early and signed with an agent. He was then chosen as the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA draft.

Professional Basketball Career

Jonny Flynn began his professional career in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Minnesota Timberwolves (2009–2011)

Flynn was drafted sixth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009. Many people had high hopes for him to become a key player for the team. In his first season, he played well, averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game.

On October 28, 2009, Flynn made his NBA debut. He helped the Timberwolves come back from a 19-point deficit to win against the New Jersey Nets. On December 14, 2009, he made a game-winning layup against the Utah Jazz, scoring 28 points in that game.

He set a new career high with 29 points on January 18, 2010, against the Philadelphia 76ers. At the end of his rookie season, Flynn was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He also had a career-high eight rebounds in a game against the New York Knicks.

In the summer of 2010, Flynn had hip surgery. This surgery affected his playing ability and his performance declined in the 2010–11 season. His points and assists per game dropped.

Houston Rockets (2011–2012)

During the 2011 NBA draft, Flynn was traded to the Houston Rockets. This trade involved several players and draft picks.

Portland Trail Blazers (2012)

On March 15, 2012, Flynn was traded again, this time to the Portland Trail Blazers. He played a short time for them.

Melbourne Tigers (2012–2013)

After leaving the NBA, Flynn signed with the Melbourne Tigers in Australia's National Basketball League. In his first game, he played very well, helping his team win by a large margin.

Flynn continued to make an impact in Australia. He was chosen to play in the 2012 NBL All-Star Game. He had 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists in that game.

Flynn later joined the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers for NBA Summer League games in 2013. After this, he did not return to the NBA.

Orlandina (2014–2015)

In September 2013, Flynn joined the Sichuan Blue Whales in China, but left due to an injury. On August 30, 2014, Flynn signed with Orlandina Basket in Italy. However, he played only two games before getting injured again and leaving the team.
