Joplin is a small community in Liberty County, Montana, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a specific area counted by the government for population, but it doesn't have its own local government. In 2010, about 157 people lived there.

History of Joplin, Montana

Joplin was started in 1910 by a man named Joseph E. Rehal. He was an immigrant from Lebanon and also became the first postmaster of the town. Even before it was officially founded, Joplin was a stop on the Great Northern Railway, a major train line, as early as 1902.

Train Accident Near Joplin

On September 25, 2021, a sad event happened near Joplin. An Amtrak passenger train, called the Empire Builder, went off its tracks. This happened about one mile west of Joplin. The train was traveling from Chicago to Seattle. Three people died, and 50 others were hurt in the accident. Eight of the train's ten cars derailed.

Geography and Location

Joplin is located on the eastern side of Liberty County in Montana. It shares its eastern border with Inverness, which is in Hill County. U.S. Route 2, a major highway, runs along the southern part of Joplin. This highway leads west about 10 miles (16 km) to Chester, which is the main town in Liberty County. It also goes east about 50 miles (80 km) to Havre.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Joplin area covers about 1.29 square miles (3.34 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.07 square kilometers), being water.

Joplin is counted as a census-designated place (CDP) by the United States Census Bureau. This helps them collect information about the population.

In the year 2000, there were 210 people living in Joplin. These people lived in 91 households, and 66 of those were families. The population density was about 166.6 people per square mile. Most of the people living in Joplin were White (99.52%). A small percentage (1.90%) were Hispanic or Latino.

The average household in Joplin had about 2.31 people. The average family had about 2.70 people. The population was spread out across different age groups. About 22.4% of the people were under 18 years old. About 22.9% were 65 years or older. The average age of people in Joplin was 43 years old.

Education in Joplin

The original Joplin School closed in 2005. This happened when several local schools joined together to form a bigger school district. This new district is called the Chester-Joplin-Inverness public school district. It serves students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

Before this, Joplin Schools had already joined with Inverness, Montana, in the early 1980s. They formed the J-I school before later combining with the Chester School District. In 1974, the graduating class from Joplin had 18 students.
