Jordan Run Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Grant County, West Virginia. It's a natural wonder where the Jordan Run stream drops about 25 to 30 feet (7.6 to 9.1 meters). This amazing waterfall is a part of the North Fork South Branch Potomac River system.
Where is Jordan Run Falls?
Jordan Run Falls is found inside Jordan Run Gorge. This is a small canyon located just northwest of the Smoke Hole Caverns visitors parking lot. The Jordan Run stream flows into the main river at this spot. The waterfall itself is about 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers) upstream from where the stream meets the river. Getting to the falls can be a bit of a challenge. You need to hike up the stream bed, and there isn't a clear trail.
Kayaking Adventures
Jordan Run is known as a challenging stream for kayaking. It is considered a Class 5 stream, which means it has very difficult rapids and drops. Jordan Run Falls is one of the biggest waterfalls in West Virginia that kayakers sometimes try to go over.
If kayakers want to avoid going over the falls, they can carry their kayaks around it. This is called "portaging." It can be done high up on the right side of the river. Be aware that there are often wood obstacles in the water, which can make kayaking tricky. Below the falls, the run becomes a Class 3, which is still challenging but less extreme.
