The Story of Jordans Cereals

How Jordans Began

Jordans in Biggleswade
Holme Mills, where Jordans started

The history of Jordans started a long time ago, in 1855. A farmer named William Herbert Jordan bought Holme Mills. This mill is located in Biggleswade, a town in Bedfordshire, England. For many years, the mill was used to produce flour.

From Flour to Granola

The mill continued making flour until 1970. Then, in 1972, two brothers, Bill and David Jordan, decided to try something new. They had discovered granola while visiting California. They liked it so much that they decided to start making it themselves. This was the beginning of Jordans Cereals.

New Products and Awards

Jordans first product was granola. In 1981, they started making granola bars, which were a new and convenient snack. The company grew and even won a special award. In April 2003, Jordans received a Queen's Awards for Enterprise. This award recognizes businesses for their outstanding achievements.

Bill Jordan, one of the founders, was also honored. In 2005, he became an MBE. This award was for his important contributions to the food and drink industries.

Joining a Bigger Family

In 2007, a large company called Associated British Foods (ABF) bought a part of Jordans. They bought more shares in 2008. By 2013, Jordans became fully owned by ABF. This meant Jordans joined a much larger family of food brands.

Helping Bees and Nature

Jordans cares about the environment, especially about bees. The company has a special campaign called Big Buzz. This campaign started in May 2009. It works with groups like the British Beekeepers' Association and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. They all work together to help stop the fast decline in the bee population. Bees are very important for our planet and for growing food.

Jordans in the Cereal World

Jordans is one of the biggest cereal makers in the UK. It is the fourth largest, after Kelloggs, Nestlé, and Weetabix. This means many people in the UK choose Jordans cereals for their breakfast.

Jordans is also part of a group called the Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers. This group is a member of the European Breakfast Cereal Association. These groups help cereal companies work together and share ideas.
