Jorge Fernández Díaz, born on April 6, 1950, is a Spanish politician. He is a member of the political party called the Partido Popular, often shortened to PP. He has held important roles in the Spanish government, including serving as the Minister of the Interior.

Early Life and Education

Jorge Fernández Díaz was born in Valladolid, Spain, on April 6, 1950. He was one of ten children. His father was a military officer. When he was three years old, his family moved to Barcelona.

He studied industrial engineering at the Technical University College of Barcelona. This type of engineering focuses on making processes more efficient. His younger brother, Alberto Fernández Díaz, also became a leader in the PP party in Catalonia. Jorge was the chairman of the Catalan PP from 1989 to 1991.

Political Career

Díaz began his career as an engineer and later became a civil servant. A civil servant is someone who works for the government. He joined the People's Party and has been a member of the Spanish parliament since 1989.

In 1983, he became a leader for the Alianza Popular party in Barcelona. The next year, he started serving as a deputy in the Catalan Parliament. From 1986 to 1989, he was also a senator.

In 1988, he was elected to the Catalan Parliament again, but this time for the new People's Party. In 1989, he moved to national politics. He was elected to the Congress of Deputies to represent Barcelona.

He served as a secretary of state in all governments led by Prime Minister José María Aznar. From 2008 to 2011, he was one of the vice presidents of the Congress. In November 2011, he was the top candidate for his party in Barcelona during the general election.

In December 2011, Jorge Fernández Díaz was chosen to be the Minister of the Interior. He served in this role under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Views and Beliefs

Díaz is known as a conservative and religious politician. In March 2013, he shared his thoughts on the law about traditional marriage. He stated that his views were based on both religious and rational concerns. He is also a member of Opus Dei, which is a religious organization.
