Jorge Fernández Díaz (born 6 April 1950) is a Spanish politician. He is a member of the Partido Popular (PP), which is a major political party in Spain.

Early Life and Education

Jorge Fernández Díaz was born on 6 April 1950 in Valladolid, Spain. He was one of ten children. When he was three years old, his family moved to Barcelona.

He studied industrial engineering at the Technical University College of Barcelona. He earned a degree in industrial engineering. His younger brother, Alberto Fernández Díaz, also became a well-known politician in Catalonia.

Political Career Highlights

Díaz started his career as an engineer and a civil servant. He joined the People's Party and has been an important figure in Spanish politics for many years.

Early Political Roles

In 1983, he became a leader for the Alianza Popular party in Barcelona. The next year, he served as a deputy in the Catalan Parliament. From 1986 to 1989, he was also a senator.

In 1988, he was elected to the Catalan Parliament again, this time for the new People's Party.

National Parliament and Ministerial Role

In 1989, Jorge Fernández Díaz was elected to the Spanish Parliament. He represented Barcelona. He served as a secretary of state under Prime Minister José María Aznar.

From 2008 to 2011, he was one of the vice presidents of the Spanish Parliament. In November 2011, he was a top candidate for his party in the general election.

In December 2011, he was appointed as the Minister of the Interior. He served in this important role under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy until November 2016.

Personal Views

Jorge Fernández Díaz is known as a conservative politician. He also holds strong religious beliefs. He is a supernumerary member of the Opus Dei, a Catholic organization.
