Jorge Guillén y Álvarez (January 18, 1893February 6, 1984) was an important Spanish poet. He was a member of a famous group of writers known as the Generation of '27. This group included many talented poets who made a big impact on Spanish literature.

The Life of Jorge Guillén

Jorge Guillén was born in a city called Valladolid, Spain. His life was quite similar to his friend, Pedro Salinas. Jorge even took over Pedro's job as a Spanish teaching assistant at the University of Paris from 1917 to 1923.

He also taught at several other universities in Spain and England. He was a professor at the University of Murcia from 1925 to 1929. Then he taught at the University of Oxford from 1929 to 1931. After that, he was at the University of Seville from 1932 to 1938.

Life in the United States

Because of difficult times in Spain, Jorge Guillén had to leave his home country. He moved to the United States to continue his teaching career. He became a Spanish professor at Wellesley College from 1941 until 1967.

Later Years and Awards

After retiring, Jorge Guillén moved to Italy. There, he got married for the second time. Later, he returned to Spain and settled in the city of Málaga.

In 1977, Jorge Guillén received a very special award. It was called the Miguel de Cervantes Prize. This is one of the most important awards for writers who write in the Spanish language. He passed away in Málaga in 1984 when he was 91 years old.
