Jorge Luis Masvidal (born November 12, 1984) is an American professional boxer and former professional mixed martial artist. He competed in the welterweight and lightweight divisions. Masvidal fought for 20 years, from 2003 to 2023. He competed in major organizations like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Bellator, and Strikeforce. He holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history, which was only five seconds long. He also won the special UFC "BMF" Championship belt.

His Early Life

Jorge Masvidal was born and grew up in Miami, Florida. His father was Cuban, and his mother was Peruvian. His father came to the U.S. from Cuba in a raft when he was young.

From a young age, Masvidal was often involved in informal fights. Videos of his fights, including defeating Kimbo Slice's protégé "Ray," can be found online. He first wanted to wrestle in high school. However, his grades made him unable to join the team. After that, he started training in karate and mixed martial arts.

His Mixed Martial Arts Career

Starting Out

Masvidal won his first mixed martial arts fight on May 24, 2003. He won by knockout. He also fought UFC fighter Joe Lauzon and won by technical knockout.

He had a 3–0 record in the BodogFIGHT promotion. This included wins over Keith Wisniewski and Steve Berger. He also knocked out Yves Edwards with a head-kick.

Fighting in Different Leagues

Masvidal joined Bellator in April 2009. He won his first fight there by TKO. However, he lost in the semifinals to Toby Imada. This loss was named "Submission of the Year" by many MMA news outlets.

After Bellator, Masvidal moved to the welterweight division. He fought Paul Daley in September 2010. Daley won that fight by decision. After this, Masvidal signed with Strikeforce.

In Strikeforce, he won against Billy Evangelista and K. J. Noons. He then fought Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship in December 2011. He lost that championship fight.

Joining the UFC

When Strikeforce closed in January 2013, Masvidal joined the UFC. He won his first UFC fight against Tim Means in April 2013. He quickly fought again, beating Michael Chiesa by submission.

His third UFC fight was against Rustam Khabilov in November 2013. He lost this fight, but it was so exciting that it earned him his first "Fight of the Night" bonus.

Big Fights and Achievements

Masvidal continued to fight in the UFC, winning against fighters like Pat Healy, Daron Cruickshank, and James Krause. In 2015, he moved back to the welterweight division. He earned a "Performance of the Night" bonus by knocking out Cezar Ferreira.

In 2017, Masvidal had a big win against Donald Cerrone. He won by TKO in the second round, earning another "Performance of the Night" bonus. He then faced Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson, losing both fights.

After a break, Masvidal returned in 2019. He knocked out Darren Till in London, earning both "Fight of the Night" and "Performance of the Night" awards.

His next fight was against Ben Askren in July 2019. Masvidal won by knockout in just 5 seconds with a flying knee. This was the fastest knockout in UFC history! This amazing win earned him "Performance of the Night" and was named "Knockout of the Year."

In November 2019, Masvidal fought Nate Diaz for the special "BMF" (Baddest Motherf***er) title. Masvidal won the fight when the doctor stopped it due to a cut over Diaz's eye.

Championship Challenges and Retirement

In 2020, Masvidal stepped in on short notice to fight Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship. He lost this fight by decision. They had a rematch in 2021, where Masvidal lost by knockout.

He later fought Colby Covington in March 2022, losing by decision in a fight that earned "Fight of the Night."

On April 8, 2023, Masvidal faced Gilbert Burns. After losing this fight by decision, Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

His Boxing Career

After retiring from MMA, Masvidal returned to fighting in boxing. On July 6, 2024, he faced Nate Diaz in a boxing match. He lost the fight by majority decision.

Other Interests

Masvidal has also been involved in professional wrestling. He appeared for All Elite Wrestling in 2021, attacking Chris Jericho and Jake Hager.

He also has business interests. In 2020, he launched a mezcal brand. In 2021, he started his own bare-knuckle MMA promotion called Gamebred Fighting Championship. In 2022, he launched another MMA promotion called iKON FC.
