Donald Anthony Cerrone (born March 29, 1983), known as "Cowboy", is an American former professional mixed martial artist, kickboxer, and actor. He competed in the Lightweight and Welterweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Fans respected him for always being ready to fight. He had 38 fights in his 11 years in the UFC. Cerrone fought for the UFC lightweight championship in 2015. He was added to the UFC Hall of Fame in July 2023.

About Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone
Cerrone was born in Denver, Colorado. He has Irish and Italian family roots. When he was young, Cerrone was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. He did not receive treatment for it. When Cerrone was about 16, he went to live with his grandmother, Jerry Cerrone. Donald said that Jerry welcomed him.
Cerrone went to Air Academy High School. There, he started professional bull riding. At age 20, Cerrone began training in kickboxing. Later, he also trained in Muay Thai. After winning some kickboxing events, Cerrone decided to become a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter.
Donald Cerrone's MMA Journey
Cerrone started his MMA career in Commerce City, Colorado. He trained at a gym called Freedom Fighters. In 2006, Cerrone began training with other skilled MMA fighters. These included Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre. They trained at Greg Jackson's school in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Fighting in World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)
Cerrone joined the WEC. His first fight there was against Kenneth Alexander. He won by submission quickly. However, the win was changed to a no-contest.
Cerrone then fought Danny Castillo at WEC 34. He won with an armbar in the first round. Next, he faced Rob McCullough at WEC 36 in November 2008. Cerrone won by unanimous decision. Both fighters earned the Fight of the Night award.
On January 25, 2009, at WEC 38, he fought the WEC Lightweight Champion, Jamie Varner. Cerrone lost by technical split decision. The fight was very close and won Fight of the Night.
Cerrone was set to fight Rich Crunkilton again at WEC 41. But Crunkilton was injured. James Krause stepped in. Cerrone defeated Krause by submission in the first round.
Cerrone and Varner planned a rematch. But Varner was still recovering from his hand injury. So, Cerrone fought Benson Henderson for the WEC Interim Lightweight Championship at WEC 43. He lost by unanimous decision. Both fighters received the Fight of the Night bonus.
Cerrone faced Ed Ratcliff at WEC 45 in December 2009. Cerrone won by submission in the third round. This fight also earned him Fight of the Night honors.
Cerrone fought Benson Henderson again for the WEC Lightweight Championship at WEC 48. Cerrone lost by guillotine choke submission in the first round.
Cerrone faced his rival Jamie Varner in their rematch at WEC 51. He won by unanimous decision. Both fighters exchanged words between rounds. The fight won Fight of the Night honors.
Cerrone then fought Chris Horodecki at WEC 53. He won by submission with a triangle choke in the second round.
Joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
In October 2010, the World Extreme Cagefighting joined with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. All WEC fighters, including Cerrone, moved to the UFC.
Cerrone faced Paul Kelly at UFC 126 in February 2011. Cerrone won by tapout due to a rear naked choke. Both fighters earned Fight of the Night honors.
Cerrone was supposed to fight Mac Danzig at UFC 131. But Danzig was injured. Vagner Rocha replaced him. Cerrone won the fight by unanimous decision.
Cerrone was scheduled to fight Paul Taylor at UFC on Versus 5. Taylor was injured, so Charles Oliveira stepped in. Cerrone won by TKO in the first round. He earned Knockout of Night honors.
Cerrone faced Dennis Siver at UFC 137. Cerrone won by submission in the first round. He earned Submission of the Night honors.
Cerrone next fought Nate Diaz at UFC 141 in December 2011. He lost a close fight by unanimous decision. Both fighters earned Fight of the Night honors.
Cerrone was set to fight Yves Edwards at UFC on Fuel TV: The Korean Zombie vs. Poirier. Edwards was injured, and Jeremy Stephens replaced him. Cerrone defeated Stephens by unanimous decision.
Cerrone fought Melvin Guillard at UFC 150 in August 2012. He won by knockout in the first round. This performance earned Cerrone Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night honors.
Cerrone faced Anthony Pettis at UFC on Fox 6 in January 2013. Pettis won by TKO in the first round with a kick to the body. This was the first time Cerrone lost by strikes.
Cerrone next faced Strikeforce fighter K. J. Noons at UFC 160. He won by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 27 in August 2013. Cerrone lost the fight by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Evan Dunham at UFC 167 in November 2013. Cerrone won by triangle choke in the second round. This win earned him his second Submission of the Night bonus.
Cerrone faced Adriano Martins at UFC on Fox 10 in January 2014. He won by knockout from a head kick in the first round. This earned Cerrone his third Knockout of the Night bonus.
Cerrone faced Edson Barboza at UFC on Fox 11 in April 2014. Cerrone knocked him down and quickly won by rear-naked choke submission. This win earned Cerrone his first Performance of the Night bonus.
Cerrone faced Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45 in July 2014. Cerrone defeated Miller by knockout in the second round. He was the first to knock out Miller in a professional fight. This win earned Cerrone his second Performance of the Night bonus.
Cerrone was scheduled to fight Bobby Green. Instead, Cerrone faced former Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 178. Cerrone won by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Myles Jury at UFC 182 in January 2015. He won by unanimous decision.
Cerrone then fought Benson Henderson again just 15 days later at UFC Fight Night 59. He won by unanimous decision.
Cerrone was set to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 187. Nurmagomedov was injured, and John Makdessi replaced him. Cerrone won by TKO in the second round.
After winning eight fights in a row, Cerrone earned his first UFC lightweight title shot. He faced Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on Fox 17 in December 2015. Cerrone lost by TKO in just 66 seconds.
Moving to Welterweight
Cerrone was scheduled to fight Tim Means in a welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 83. Means was removed, and Alex Oliveira replaced him. Cerrone won by submission in the first round. He also received a Performance of the Night bonus.

Cerrone next faced Patrick Côté at UFC Fight Night 89 in June 2016. He won by TKO in the third round and earned another Performance of the Night bonus.
Cerrone then faced Rick Story at UFC 202 in August 2016. Cerrone won by TKO in the second round. He was awarded a Performance of the Night bonus.
In August 2016, Cerrone signed a new eight-fight contract with UFC.
Cerrone was set to fight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 205. However, Gastelum did not make weight, and the fight was canceled. Cerrone then fought Matt Brown at UFC 206. Cerrone won by knockout in the third round.
Cerrone faced Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox 23 in January 2017. He lost by TKO in the second round.
Cerrone was scheduled to fight Robbie Lawler at UFC 213. The fight was postponed to UFC 214. Cerrone lost a very close fight by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Darren Till at UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Till in October 2017. He lost by TKO in the first round.
Cerrone faced Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Medeiros in February 2018. He won by technical knockout in the first round. With this win, Cerrone tied UFC records for most finishes (fourteen) and most wins (twenty).
On June 23, 2018, Cerrone faced Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 132. He lost by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Mike Perry at UFC Fight Night 139 in November 2018. He won by submission with an armbar in the first round. This made him the first fighter to finish Perry in MMA. His fight earned him the Performance of the Night award. With this win, Cerrone set new UFC records for most finishes (fifteen) and most wins (twenty-one).
Returning to Lightweight
Cerrone faced Alexander Hernandez in a lightweight fight at UFC Fight Night 143 in January 2019. He won by TKO in the second round. With this win, Cerrone extended his UFC records for most finishes (sixteen) and most wins (twenty-two). He also became the fighter with the most fight bonuses (sixteen).
Cerrone faced Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night: Iaquinta vs. Cowboy in May 2019. He won by unanimous decision. This fight earned him the Fight of the Night bonus.
Cerrone then faced Tony Ferguson at UFC 238 in June 2019. Cerrone lost by technical knockout between the second and third rounds. His eye swelled shut, and he could not continue. This fight earned him the Fight of the Night award.
Cerrone faced Justin Gaethje at UFC Fight Night 158 in September 2019. He lost by knockout in the first round.
Back to Welterweight
Cerrone faced Conor McGregor at UFC 246 in January 2020. He lost by technical knockout in the first round.
Cerrone faced Anthony Pettis in a rematch at UFC 249 in May 2020. He lost by unanimous decision.
Cerrone faced Niko Price at UFC Fight Night 178 in September 2020. The fight was declared a majority draw.
Cerrone was set to fight Diego Sanchez at UFC on ESPN 24. Sanchez was removed, and Alex Morono replaced him. He lost the fight by technical knockout in the first round.
Cerrone was scheduled to fight Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 208. The fight was moved to UFC 274. It was then canceled because Cerrone became ill. They were rescheduled for UFC on ESPN 37. This fight was also canceled due to Lauzon having leg cramps.
Cerrone, replacing Bobby Green, faced Jim Miller at UFC 276 in July 2022. He lost by guillotine choke submission in the second round. After the fight, he announced his retirement.
Acting Career
Cerrone has had small roles in movies and TV shows since 2017. He appeared in the 2020 Netflix film Spenser Confidential.
He also had a main role with Gina Carano in the 2022 film Terror on the Prairie.
Personal Life
Cerrone and his wife Lindsay have three sons.
Cerrone is good friends with Rob McElhenney, who created It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. McElhenney has trained at Cerrone's BMF Ranch. Cerrone appeared in an episode of the show.
BMF Ranch
In 2014, Cerrone opened an MMA gym on his property in Edgewood, New Mexico. He did this to save money on training camps. Fighters like Lando Vannata and John Dodson train there.
