Mixed Martial Arts Career

Starting Out in MMA

In 2005, Melvin Guillard fought Roger Huerta. Guillard won the fight by decision. However, the result was later changed to a "No Contest." This happened because Huerta claimed Guillard used a slippery substance on his body during the fight.

The Ultimate Fighter 2 Show

Melvin Guillard joined The Ultimate Fighter 2 TV series. He was removed from the competition after losing a fight to Josh Burkman. Later, he returned for the season finale. There, he defeated Marcus Davis by technical knockout. This win happened because of a cut on Davis's face.

In his next fight, Melvin lost to Josh Neer in January 2006. He was caught in a triangle choke submission. Even though he lost, this fight was exciting. It earned him the first-ever Fight of the Night award.

Fighting in the UFC

After the lightweight division returned to the UFC, Melvin started fighting in that weight class. He won his first lightweight UFC fight in May 2006. He knocked out Rick Davis in the first round. In September 2006, he defeated Gabe Ruediger with a strong body punch.

Melvin then faced Joe Stevenson and lost by a guillotine choke. He also lost his next fight to Rich Clementi by a rear naked choke. After this, he was briefly released from the UFC. But he returned after winning a fight in another promotion.

Melvin came back to the UFC in July 2008. He knocked out Dennis Siver in just 36 seconds. This win earned him a "Knockout of the Night" bonus. He was supposed to fight Spencer Fisher later that year. However, Melvin had to pull out due to a knee injury.

In June 2009, Melvin won a close fight against Gleison Tibau. Later that year, he lost to Nate Diaz by a guillotine choke.

In February 2010, Melvin fought Ronys Torres. He trained with coach Greg Jackson for this fight. Melvin showed improved skills and won by a unanimous decision. He then knocked out Waylon Lowe in the first round in May 2010.

In September 2010, Melvin won another close fight against Jeremy Stephens. In January 2011, he defeated Evan Dunham by TKO with knees. This earned him another "Knockout of the Night" award.

In July 2012, Melvin won against Fabrício Camões by unanimous decision. He then fought Donald Cerrone in August 2012. Melvin was knocked out in the first round. This fight earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus.

In July 2013, Melvin knocked out Mac Danzig in the second round. This win earned him his third "Knockout of the Night" bonus. His fight against Ross Pearson in October 2013 ended in a "no contest." This was because Pearson was accidentally hit with an illegal knee. They were supposed to have a rematch, but Pearson got injured. Melvin then lost to Michael Johnson and was released from the UFC.

World Series of Fighting

In April 2014, Melvin Guillard signed with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF). He won his first fight there in July 2014, defeating Gesias Cavalcante by TKO.

However, this win was later changed to a "no contest." This happened because Melvin tested positive for a banned substance. He was suspended for a year, but his suspension was reduced after he agreed to get help.
