Alex Oliveira (born February 21, 1988) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist. He competes in the Welterweight division. He is well-known for his time fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

About Alex "Cowboy" Oliveira

Alex Oliveira was born and grew up in Três Rios, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before he started training in martial arts, he worked as a construction worker and a bull rider. He has several siblings. Oliveira trained in Muay Thai for a few years. Then, at age 22, he began training in mixed martial arts.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Oliveira started his professional fighting career in December 2011. He fought in the welterweight division. He built a record of 11 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. He fought in various regional events in Brazil. After a win in February 2015, Oliveira signed with the UFC.

Fighting in the UFC (2015-2022)

2015: Early UFC Fights

Oliveira joined the UFC in March 2015. He stepped in on short notice to fight Gilbert Burns. He lost this fight by submission in the third round.

In May 2015, he again took a fight on short notice. He faced K.J. Noons and won by submission in the first round. Just a month later, in June 2015, Oliveira won another fight by decision.

In November 2015, Oliveira fought Piotr Hallmann in a lightweight match. He won by knockout in the third round. This win also earned him his first Performance of the Night bonus award.

2016: Ups and Downs

Oliveira fought Donald Cerrone in February 2016. He lost this fight by submission in the first round.

In July 2016, he won a clear decision against James Moontasri. Later that year, in October, Oliveira won by knockout against Will Brooks. This fight was at a slightly heavier weight because Oliveira did not make the usual weight limit.

His fight against Tim Means in December 2016 ended in a "No Contest." This happened because Means landed illegal knees to Oliveira's head while he was on the ground. The referee decided it was an accident.

2017: Big Wins and Bonuses

Oliveira had a rematch with Tim Means in March 2017. He won this fight by submission in the second round.

In July 2017, Oliveira faced Ryan LaFlare. He won by knockout in the second round with a powerful punch. This earned him his second Performance of the Night bonus.

He then fought Yancy Medeiros in December 2017. Oliveira lost this exciting fight by TKO in the third round. Even though he lost, the fight was so good that it earned both fighters a Fight of the Night bonus.

2018: More Victories

In April 2018, Oliveira defeated Carlos Condit by submission. This win earned him another Performance of the Night bonus.

He quickly won again in September 2018. Oliveira knocked out Carlo Pedersoli Jr. in just 39 seconds of the first round.

In December 2018, he faced Gunnar Nelson. Oliveira lost this fight by submission in the second round.

2019: Tough Fights

Oliveira fought Mike Perry in April 2019. He lost this close fight by decision. This exciting match earned him his second Fight of the Night bonus.

In September 2019, he lost another decision to Nicolas Dalby.

2020: Back to Winning

In March 2020, Oliveira won a split decision against Max Griffin. A split decision means the judges disagreed, but most of them thought Oliveira won.

He followed this with a unanimous decision win over Peter Sobotta in July 2020.

In October 2020, Oliveira fought Shavkat Rakhmonov. He lost this fight by submission in the first round. Oliveira also weighed in a bit over the limit for this fight.

2021-2022: End of UFC Run

Oliveira was scheduled to fight Randy Brown in February 2021, but the fight was postponed. They eventually fought in April 2021, and Oliveira lost by submission in the first round.

In October 2021, he lost to Niko Price by unanimous decision. His last UFC fight was in March 2022 against Kevin Holland, which he lost by TKO. In April 2022, Oliveira's time with the UFC ended.

After the UFC

2022-2023: New Challenges

After leaving the UFC, Oliveira fought Michel Silva in June 2022 and lost by submission. He then had a quick win in Brazil. In December 2022, he won by TKO against Aslambek Arsamikov.

In April 2023, Oliveira lost to Kiefer Crosbie by knockout. He then won against Stefan Sekulić in June 2023 with a judo slam. In July 2023, he lost to Alexander Shlemenko by submission.

Bare-Knuckle Boxing

Alex Oliveira also tried bare-knuckle boxing. He made his debut in September 2024 against Igor Ionov. He lost this fight by knockout in the first round.
