His Early Life and Studies
Jorge Obeid was born in Diamante, Entre Ríos. His mother, Edi D'Acierno, had Italian family roots. His father, Juan Obeid, had Lebanese family roots.
He went to the National University of the Littoral in Santa Fe. He studied hard and became a chemical engineer. From 1972 to 1976, he taught at the university. During this time, he also became active in a political group called Peronist Youth.
In 1976, there was a big change in Argentina's government. This made him leave the country for a short time. He returned in 1977 and was briefly held. After democracy came back in 1983, Obeid worked as a chemist. He married Elba Inés Kemer, and they had five children together.
Starting in Politics
After returning to Argentina, Obeid stayed active in politics. In 1987, he was elected to the Santa Fe City Council. This council helps run the city. In 1989, he became the President of the Council.
Later that year, the mayor of Santa Fe, Carlos Aurelio Martínez, left his job. Jorge Obeid then became the new mayor. In 1991, people voted for him to continue as mayor. He also led the Argentine Federation of Cities for a while. In 1994, he helped write changes to the Argentine Constitution.
Becoming Governor
In 1995, Jorge Obeid was elected governor of Santa Fe Province for the first time. This was a very close election. It took 37 days to count all the votes by hand. Finally, Obeid was announced as the winner. He served as governor until 1999.
The rules in Santa Fe Province do not allow a governor to be elected right away for a second time. So, in 1999, Obeid was elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. This is a national role, like being a representative in the country's main government.
In 2003, he was elected governor of Santa Fe again. This was his second time, but not right after his first term. During his time as governor, he helped change a special election rule. This rule was called Ley de Lemas. It was a bit confusing and sometimes meant a candidate could win with fewer votes. Obeid worked to remove this rule. His second term as governor ended in December 2007.
Later Political Roles
After his second term as governor, Jorge Obeid served another full term as a Congressman. This was from 2007 to 2011. He returned to Congress again in 2013.
Sadly, Jorge Obeid passed away the next month, in January 2014. He was 66 years old.
