Later, he became the head of the National Bank for Rural Credit. He helped restructure this bank into a new organization called Financiera Rural. He led Financiera Rural until 2006.
Working for President Felipe Calderón
During President Felipe Calderón's time in office, Meade held several key positions. He worked as Chief of Staff for the Secretary of Finance. He then became the Undersecretary of Finance. Eventually, he joined the President's main group of advisors, known as the Cabinet.
Secretary of Energy (2011)
As Secretary of Energy, Meade worked on important projects. He helped start new ways to explore and produce energy. He also oversaw the building of new pipelines to bring natural gas to more communities. He helped bring electricity to almost all communities with over 100 people. He also promoted energy saving by distributing millions of energy-efficient light bulbs.
Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (2011-2012)
In 2011, Meade became the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit. In this role, he managed Mexico's money and economy. He led Mexico's efforts when it was in charge of the G20 group of major economies. He helped reach agreements to strengthen global financial organizations. He also worked to reduce trade barriers between countries. Meade helped ensure a smooth change of government with good economic growth.
Working for President Enrique Peña Nieto
After President Calderón, Meade continued to serve in the government under President Enrique Peña Nieto. He held three different cabinet positions during this administration.
Secretary of Foreign Affairs (2012-2015)

Meade's first role under President Peña Nieto was as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He worked to improve Mexico's relationships with other countries. He especially focused on strengthening ties with the United States. He created programs to promote research, innovation, and education between the two countries. He also helped undocumented Mexican migrants in the U.S. get access to health, education, and important documents. During his time, Mexico also improved its diplomatic relations with Cuba and France. In 2013, a magazine called Foreign Policy recognized him as one of the world's most powerful people.
Secretary of Social Development (2015-2016)
As Secretary of Social Development, Meade worked to help Mexico's poorest citizens. He created a plan called the National Inclusion Strategy. This plan aimed to make sure that poor people could get the social services they were legally supposed to have. During his time, about 2 million people moved out of extreme poverty. This was achieved by working with local governments, businesses, and community groups. In 2016, he received an honor called "Señor Internacional" in Laredo, Texas, for his work in the border region.
Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (2016-2017)

Meade served as Secretary of Finance and Public Credit for a second time. During this period, Mexico's economy grew more than expected. He also achieved a "primary surplus" for the first time in nine years. This means the government collected more money than it spent, not counting interest payments on debt. He also reduced the country's debt compared to its economic size. In 2017, a magazine named him Latin America's Finance Minister of the Year.
2018 Presidential Campaign
In 2017, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) changed its rules for presidential candidates. This made it possible for someone who wasn't a long-time party member, like Meade, to run. On 27 November 2017, Meade left his job as Secretary of Finance. He then announced he would run for president in the 2018 election, representing the PRI. Many saw him as a good choice because he was not officially a party member and had a good public record. He was formally chosen as the PRI's candidate in February 2018.
On Election Day, after the voting ended, Meade accepted that he had lost. He wished the winner, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, success.
Other Activities and Honors
Today, José Antonio Meade is a director for several large companies. He is also the first person from Latin America to be an independent director for HSBC Holdings, a big bank. He is also a board member for organizations like the Global Center on Adaptation.
In 2015, he received an honorary knighthood from the United Kingdom. This is a special honor given to people who are not British citizens.
