His Education and Studies
Meade studied a lot to prepare for his career. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). He also got a Bachelor's degree in Law from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Later, he went to Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in Economics.
José Antonio Meade's Career
Meade started his career in government in 1997. He worked in financial planning for retirement savings. In 1999, he helped protect bank savings in Mexico. The next year, he became a director at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.
From 2002 to 2006, he was the Chief Executive Officer of a bank that helped farmers, called the National Bank for Rural Credit. He helped change it into a new organization called Financiera Rural.
Working for President Felipe Calderón
During President Felipe Calderón's time in office, José Antonio Meade held several important roles. He worked as a top assistant in the Ministry of Finance. Later, he became a cabinet minister, serving as the Secretary of Energy and then the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit.
Secretary of Energy (2011)
As the Secretary of Energy, Meade helped make energy more available. He started projects to find and produce natural gas. He also helped build new pipelines so that natural gas could reach more communities for the first time. He worked to bring electricity to almost all communities with over 100 people. He also promoted using energy more wisely and helped distribute about 50 million energy-saving light bulbs.
Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (2011-2012)
In 2011, Meade became the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit. In this role, he managed Mexico's finances. He helped Mexico lead the G20 group of major economies. He worked to make agreements that would strengthen global financial organizations and reduce trade barriers. He also made sure that the economy grew steadily and prices remained stable during a change in presidential administrations.
Working for President Enrique Peña Nieto
José Antonio Meade continued to serve in the government under President Enrique Peña Nieto. He held three different cabinet positions during this administration.
Secretary of Foreign Affairs (2012-2015)

His first job under President Peña Nieto was as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. In this role, he worked to improve Mexico's relationships with other countries, especially the United States. He created programs to encourage research, new ideas, and higher education between the two countries. He also helped Mexican migrants in the U.S. get access to health care, education, and important documents like birth certificates. He also helped improve diplomatic ties with Cuba and France. In 2013, a magazine called Foreign Policy recognized him as one of the world's most powerful people.
Secretary of Social Development (2015-2016)
As the Secretary of Social Development, Meade focused on helping Mexico's poorest citizens. He created a plan called the National Inclusion Strategy. This plan aimed to make sure that people in poverty could get the social services they were legally allowed to have. During his time in this role, about 2 million people were able to move out of extreme poverty. This was achieved by working with local governments, businesses, and community groups.
Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (2016-2017)

Meade served as the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit for a second time. During this period, major financial agencies improved their outlook on Mexico's economy. In 2017, Mexico's economy grew more than expected. He also managed to achieve a budget surplus for the first time in nine years, meaning the government spent less than it collected. He also reduced the country's debt compared to its economic output. In 2017, he was named Latin America's Finance Minister of the Year by Capital Markets magazine.
Running for President in 2018
In 2017, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) changed its rules. This allowed people who were not long-time members of the party to run for president. This change was seen as a way for Meade to become a candidate, as he was not a formal member of the PRI.
On November 27, 2017, Meade left his job as Secretary of Finance. He then announced that he would run for president in the 2018 election, representing the PRI. Many saw him as a good choice because he had a clean public record and was not directly tied to past party issues. He was officially chosen as the PRI's candidate in February 2018.
On Election Day, after the voting ended, Meade accepted that he had lost. He wished the winner, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, success.
Other Activities and Roles
Today, José Antonio Meade serves on the boards of several large companies, including Grupo ALFA and Grupo Comercial Chedraui. He is also the first person from Latin America to be an independent director for HSBC Holdings, a major global bank. He is also a board member for the Global Center on Adaptation and the Center for US-Mexico Studies at UC San Diego.
