Early Steps and Big Influences

José started learning to paint from Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano. He was very good at drawing. In 1851, he joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Seville.

Later, in 1868, he studied famous paintings at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He especially liked the works of Goya and Velázquez. In 1867, he traveled to Jerez de la Frontera to work. There, he restored old art and designed beautiful stained glass.

In 1871, José moved to Rome and stayed for four years. This was a very important time for him. He met another artist named Mariano Fortuny, who had a big impact on José's painting style.

Traveling and New Styles

In 1881, José moved to París, France. He lived there for nine years. During this time, he painted scenes from the 18th century, much like Fortuny. His paintings were very successful.

By 1890, he moved back to Madrid. Here, he started painting everyday life scenes in a style called costumbrismo. This style focused on showing the customs and traditions of ordinary people.

Returning Home to Seville

A sad event happened in 1892 when José's wife and daughter passed away. This led him to return to his hometown of Seville. He stayed there for the rest of his life.

In Seville, he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts. He also became a teacher, sharing his knowledge with many students until he died in 1903. Some of his students included famous artists like Daniel Vázquez Díaz and Sorolla.

In the late 1800s, José often visited the Alcala de Guadaíra circle of landscape painters. He created some amazing landscape paintings during this period.

Famous Works and Illustrations

Some of José Jiménez Aranda's most well-known paintings include:

  • A Pass in the Bullring (painted in 1880)
  • Una desgracia (meaning A Disaster, painted in 1890)
  • Slave for Sale (around 1897)

Besides painting, José was also a talented cartoonist and illustrator. He created 689 detailed drawings for a special edition of the famous book Don Quijote. This edition was published in 1905, celebrating 300 years since the book was first released.
