About José Luis Perales
His Early Life and Music
José Luis Perales was born in a small town called Castejón, near the city of Cuenca. He grew up in a traditional family. From a young age, he loved music. He learned to play the lute when he was just 6 years old. This helped him start his musical journey.
He began writing his own songs at 14. However, he was very shy about sharing them. He didn't show his songs to record companies until 1968, when he was 23. He said that other people in the music world had to present his songs for him. He was afraid of failing.
Perales lived in his hometown for 16 years. In 1961, he moved to Seville to study electronics. After finishing his studies, he moved to Madrid. There, he studied surveying and worked as an electrician. He also shined shoes to earn money.
How He Became a Singer
While studying, José Luis kept writing songs. At first, he wrote only for other singers. But a music producer named Rafael Trabucchelli believed in him. Trabucchelli convinced Perales to record his own songs. This is how his career as a singer began.
Perales also joined a music group called a tuna while in school. He continued to compose music in his free time. He sold many songs to other artists. Some of these artists included Fórmula V, Jeanette, and Miguel Bosé.
Eventually, people found out he had some special songs he hadn't given away. They listened to them and asked him to sing them himself. Perales felt a bit scared at first. He thought being a singer was a very difficult job. But he got used to it over time. He often said he was surprised when people praised his music.
First Songs and Big Hits
One of his first songs was "Niebla." He was inspired to write it while listening to the radio. This song showed him that music was his true calling. He also served in the military in Madrid. During this time, he continued his studies and worked as a draftsman. He wrote many songs while waiting for someone to sing them.
His very first song to appear on a record was "En San Marcos." It was sung by Daniel Velázquez in 1972. This song described the beautiful city of Venice.
In 1976, Perales wrote "Porque te vas." This song was performed by Jeanette. It sold an amazing 4 million copies worldwide. His first album, Celos de mi Guitarra (Jealous of my Guitar), was also a big success. It became popular in Spain and across Latin America.
