Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Marco Antonio Muñiz was born in New York City. His parents were from Puerto Rico. His father, Felipe Muñiz, was a hospital worker and musician. His mother, Guillermina Quiñones, was a homemaker.
Anthony was named after a Mexican singer, Marco Antonio Muñiz. He grew up in East Harlem, also called Spanish Harlem. He is the youngest of eight children. He was raised in the Roman Catholic faith.
His musical journey started at home. His father, a guitarist, taught him to sing in both Spanish and English. As a child, Anthony listened to many types of music. These included rock, rhythm and blues, and pop. He also enjoyed salsa legends like Héctor Lavoe and Willie Colón. He has said that Tito Puente, a famous percussionist, greatly influenced his life and career.
Singing Career Highlights
Anthony started his career singing for freestyle music and house music groups in New York. He changed his name to Marc Anthony to avoid confusion with the Mexican singer. He also wrote songs and sang backup for pop groups like Menudo. Unlike earlier salsa artists, Anthony's style mixed salsa with the R&B and house music he grew up with.
His first album, "Rebel," came out in 1988. He also wrote and produced songs for other artists. In 1992, he performed with music producer Little Louie Vega. They even opened for the famous Latin bandleader Tito Puente at Madison Square Garden. After 1992, he focused more on salsa and other Latin music styles.
Joining RMM Records
At first, Anthony was not sure about becoming a salsa musician. He turned down an offer from Ralph Mercado, who was the president of RMM Records. However, he heard Juan Gabriel's song "Hasta Que Te Conocí" and changed his mind. He asked Mercado if he could record it as a salsa song.
Inspired by artists like Tito Puente and Juan Gabriel, Anthony released his first Spanish-language album, Otra Nota, in 1993. This album helped him become a new star in salsa music. By the early 1990s, he was selling more salsa records than any other artist.
His 1995 album, Todo a su tiempo, won a Billboard Award. It was also nominated for a Grammy. The album sold over 800,000 copies and became a gold record.
Anthony's next Spanish album, Contra La Corriente, led to a TV special on HBO. The album's song "Y Hubo Alguien" was his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. This was also the first time a salsa song reached number one. The album was the first salsa album to appear on the English-language Billboard 200 chart. Anthony left RMM Records in 1999.
