José Prado Macías Salazar (born January 25, 1972) is a former professional baseball player from Panama. He was known as a utility player, meaning he could play many different positions on the field.

Macías played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos, and Chicago Cubs from 1999 to 2005. He also played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2006. He was a switch-hitter, which means he could bat from both the left and right sides of the plate. He threw the ball with his right hand.

A Versatile Baseball Player

José Macías was a very useful player because he could play many different positions well. He was mostly a third baseman. However, he also played in the middle of the infield (like shortstop or second base). He could even play in all three outfield positions.

Macías was always ready to help his team wherever he was needed. He even pitched in games in his home country of Panama. He once said he wanted to play all nine positions in a game if his team ever needed him to. This shows how much he loved the game and how flexible he was.

Playing in Different Leagues

After playing for the Chicago Cubs, Macías joined the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan for the 2006 season. This was a new experience for him, playing in a different country and league.

Minor League and Mexican Baseball

After his time in Japan, Macías returned to North America. He signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007. He played for their Triple-A team, the Nashville Sounds, for the entire season.

In 2008, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, he was released during spring training, which is when teams practice before the season starts. After that, Macías went to play in the Mexican League. He played for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in 2008. From 2009 to 2010, he played for the Piratas de Campeche.

Winter Baseball and Retirement

Baseball players often play in "winter leagues" during the off-season. Macías played for several teams in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, including the Leones del Caracas and Tiburones de La Guaira. He also played in the Mexican Pacific League for teams like the Algodoneros de Guasave and Yaquis de Obregón.

José Macías retired from playing professional baseball in 2011.

Life After Playing

After his playing career, José Macías continued to be involved in baseball. He recently worked as the bench coach for the Guerreros de Oaxaca in the Mexican League. A bench coach helps the manager and players during games.
