José Manuel Hernández (1853 – 25 August 1921) was an important Venezuelan leader. He was an army general, a congressman, and even ran for president. He also served in the government as a cabinet member. Hernández was known for being involved in several uprisings against the government.
Early Life and Nickname
Hernández was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1853.
He was often called El Mocho, which means "the hand-less one." This nickname came from a battle wound that crippled his right hand.
Political Career and Campaigns
José Manuel Hernández became famous for his many attempts to challenge the government. He was also put in prison several times because of these actions.
He was known for his modern approach to presidential campaigns. He organized large gatherings, held meetings, used campaign posters, and traveled all over the country to meet people. This was quite new for his time.
Later Years and Exile
In 1911, the government led by Juan Vicente Gómez forced Hernández to leave Venezuela. This is called being exiled.
After leaving his home country, he lived in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the United States. José Manuel Hernández passed away in New York City in 1921. He was 67 or 68 years old.
