About José María Íñigo
José María Íñigo was born in Bilbao, Spain. He started his career in his hometown. He worked for local radio stations like Radio Bilbao and COPE.
Soon after, he moved to London. From there, he helped with music shows on Cadena SER. When he came back to Spain, he settled in Madrid. He continued to work on popular radio music shows. Some of these were El Musiquero and El Gran Musical. He also worked on Los 40 Principales.
Becoming a TV Star
In 1968, Íñigo joined Televisión Española (TVE). This was a big step for his career. He worked on a show called Último grito. Later, he presented Ritmo 70, a music program.
He became one of the most well-known TV presenters in Spain. This happened when he hosted Estudio abierto. He hosted this show from 1972 to 1975. He came back to host it again from 1984 to 1985.
Between 1975 and 1984, he presented other popular shows. These shows were similar to Estudio abierto. They featured musical performances. They also had interviews with famous people. Sometimes, he interviewed everyday people with interesting stories. These shows included Directísimo, Esta noche...fiesta, and Fantástico.
After a break, Íñigo hosted a morning show on Telecinco in 1993 and 1994. He worked with Laura Valenzuela on this show. From then on, he worked on many different types of TV shows. These included variety shows, talk shows, and reality shows. He worked for both public and private TV channels. Since 2000, he also worked for Radio Nacional de España (RNE).
His Connection to Eurovision
José María Íñigo is well-known for his work with the Eurovision Song Contest. He announced the Spanish jury's results in 1975 and 1976.
In 2008, a Spanish documentary used something he said. It suggested that the 1968 Eurovision voting might have been unfair. It claimed that the Spanish dictator at the time, Francisco Franco, had influenced the votes. This would mean the United Kingdom should have won. However, Íñigo later explained his words. He said he was just repeating a common rumor. He also said his comments were taken out of context.
From 2011 to 2017, he was the TV commentator for Eurovision. He explained the show to Spanish viewers. From 2015 to 2017, Julia Varela joined him as a co-commentator.
His Family Life
In 1970, José María Íñigo married Josette Nahmias. She was a painter and model designer. Later, on December 17, 1984, he married María del Pilar Piniella. They were married in Barcelona. He had four children.
His Final Years
José María Íñigo passed away in Madrid on May 5, 2018. He was 75 years old. His death happened just before the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.
The night before he died, he told a friend he felt very weak. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. His wife later shared that he had been diagnosed with a type of cancer two years earlier. But he kept working almost until his last day.
His death has been linked to mesothelioma. This is a type of lung cancer. It can be caused by exposure to asbestos, a material that can cause health problems. In Íñigo's case, it was thought to be caused by soundproofing material. This material was in Studio 1 of Prado del Rey, where he worked. However, RTVE (the Spanish public broadcaster) and the Spanish Social Security agency do not agree with this link.
