The Life of José Raimundo Carrillo
Early Life and Military Service
José Raimundo Carrillo was born in 1749 in Loreto, Baja California. This area was part of "New Spain," which is now México. He came to what is now California in 1769. He was a soldier with the first group led by Gaspar de Portolá. Carrillo was a skilled soldier and rose to the rank of Captain.
He served at several important military forts called "presidios." These included the Presidio of Santa Barbara, the Presidio of Monterey, and later the Presidio of San Diego. From 1807 to 1809, he was the "commandant" (leader) of the Presidio of San Diego. He passed away in 1809 and was buried at Presidio Hill on November 10, 1809.
Family and Legacy
On April 23, 1781, José Raimundo Carrillo married Tomasa Ignacia Lugo. She was the daughter of another soldier, Francisco Lugo. Their wedding was performed by Junipero Serra in San Carlos, which was also in New Spain.
