Josaphat-Robert Large (born November 15, 1942 – died October 28, 2017) was a talented writer. He was a poet, a novelist, and an art critic. He was born in Haiti and later became an American citizen.
His book, Les terres entourées de larmes (which means "Shore surrounded with tears"), won a big award. It was called the Prix littéraire des Caraïbes (Caribbean literary Prize) in 2003. He was also considered for the Haitian Grand Literary Prize in 2004. Other famous writers like Edwidge Danticat were also nominated.
Josaphat-Robert Large was a finalist in another writing contest in 2002. He wrote his books in two languages: French and Haitian Creole. He was part of important groups for writers. These included the Society of French intellectuals and the PEN Club America.
Universities held special meetings to discuss his novels. One was at Florida International University in 2001. Another was at Fordham University in 2006. He also took part in big literary festivals.

His Life and Exile
Josaphat-Robert Large left Haiti in late 1963. This happened after he was arrested during a student protest. The protest was against the government of Papa Doc Duvalier.
When he moved to New York, he continued his studies. He learned English at Columbia University. He also studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography. He helped start a theater group called La Troupe de Théâtre Kouidor. He often wrote for Haitian newspapers too.
His Passing
Josaphat-Robert Large died in 2017. He passed away from cancer.
