Jérémie (pronounced zheh-reh-MEE; in Haitian Creole, Jeremi) is an important city in Haiti. It is the capital of the Grand'Anse department. In 2003, about 31,000 people lived there.
The city is somewhat separated from other parts of Haiti. The Grande-Anse River flows close by. Jérémie is often called the city of the poets. This is because many famous writers, poets, and historians were born there.

Early History and Famous Births
In 1762, a brave general named Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was born in Jérémie. He was known for fighting alongside Napoleon in Italy and Egypt. He was also the father of the famous writer Alexandre Dumas, who wrote books like The Three Musketeers.
Difficult Times in the City
In 1964, Jérémie experienced a very sad event. Many people lost their lives during a time of conflict. This event is known as the Jérémie Vespers.
In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused a lot of damage to Jérémie. The city was almost completely destroyed by the strong storm.
Unique Discoveries and Connections
In the early 2000s, archaeologists found something special in Jérémie. They discovered an old synagogue, which is a place of worship for Jewish people. This was the only one found on the island of Hispaniola.
Historically, many families in Jérémie had mixed backgrounds, including Jewish roots.
Help After the 2010 Earthquake
After a big earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, Jérémie played a role in helping people. Food and medical supplies were flown into Jérémie Airport. These supplies were then transported to help those who were hurt or displaced by the earthquake. Sometimes, these aid convoys faced difficulties.

Notable Individuals and Their Contributions
- Thomas-Alexandre Dumas: A brave general during the French Revolutionary Wars. He was born in Jérémie before Haiti became independent. His father took him to France when he was 18. He later became the father of the famous writer Alexandre Dumas.
