Josep Casadevall (born 10 September 1946) is an important lawyer and judge from Andorra. He is known for his work at the European Court of Human Rights. This court helps make sure that human rights are protected across Europe.

His Early Life and Education

Josep Casadevall was born on 10 September 1946 in Girona, a city in Spain. He later moved to Andorra, a small country in the Pyrenees mountains. From 1970 to 1980, he worked as the Secretary General of Andorra la Vella. This is the capital city of Andorra.

In 1978, he finished his law degree at the University of Madrid. He then started working as a lawyer in Andorra in 1980.

Becoming a Judge

Josep Casadevall became a very respected lawyer. He was the Secretary General of the Bar Association in 1984. This group helps organize and support lawyers. Later, he became its President in 1993. From 1985 to 1998, he also taught law at the Spanish National Open University.

Since 1996, Casadevall has been a judge at the European Court of Human Rights. This court makes sure countries follow the European Convention on Human Rights. This important agreement protects people's basic rights.

Before 1998, being a judge at this court was a part-time job. But in 1998, the court became a full-time organization. Casadevall then became a full-time judge. He lives in Strasbourg, France, where the court is located. From 2008, he was also the President of one of the court's sections.
