Joseph Benton Donley (born October 10, 1838 – died January 23, 1917) was an American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. Donley served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania.
Early Life and Education
Joseph Benton Donley was born in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania. This was on October 10, 1838. He went to college at Waynesburg College. Today, this school is known as Waynesburg University. He graduated from Waynesburg College in 1859.
After college, Donley became a teacher. He taught at Abingdon College in Abingdon, Illinois. He worked there from 1860 to 1862.
Military Service
In 1862, Joseph Donley joined the Union Army. This was during the American Civil War. He became a captain in the 83rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served in the army throughout the entire war.
Law Career
After the war, Donley decided to study law. He went to the Albany Law School in Albany, New York. He graduated from law school in 1866.
In 1867, he was allowed to practice law. This means he passed the test to become a lawyer. He started his law practice in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. For a short time in 1867 and 1868, he also worked as a referee in bankruptcy cases. This role involved helping people who could not pay their debts.
Political Career
Joseph Donley was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the Forty-first Congress. This meant he served in the U.S. House of Representatives. His term began on March 4, 1869.
He tried to be re-elected in 1870 but was not successful. After his time in Congress, he went back to being a lawyer. He continued his law practice in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
Later Life and Death
Joseph Benton Donley passed away in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He died on January 23, 1917, at the age of 78. He was buried in Green Mount Cemetery.
