Abingdon is a city in Knox County, Illinois, United States. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) west of Peoria. Abingdon is part of the Galesburg area.
The city was first settled in 1828. It officially became a city in 1857. In 1907, a patent for the common spring-loaded mousetrap was given to William Hooker William Armstrong and Knox Mark from Abingdon. In 2020, the city had a population of 2,951 people.

History of Abingdon
Abingdon was planned out in 1836. It was named after Abingdon, Maryland. This was the hometown of one of the first people to settle there.
Geography and Location
Abingdon is in the southwestern part of Knox County. Illinois Route 41 goes right through the middle of the city. This road leads north about 11 miles (18 km) to Galesburg. Galesburg is the main city in the county. Route 41 also goes south about 20 miles (32 km) to Bushnell.
According to the 2010 census, Abingdon covers a total area of about 1.46 square miles (3.78 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Schools in Abingdon
Until July 1, 2013, Abingdon had its own school district. This included Hedding Grade School, Abingdon Middle School, and Abingdon High School.
In November 2012, people voted to combine the school district with Avon. Starting in July 2013, the new district became known as Abingdon-Avon CUSD #276.
Now, Abingdon is home to Hedding Grade School, which teaches students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Abingdon also has the Abingdon-Avon High School. Avon has an elementary school and the Abingdon-Avon Middle School, which serves students in grades 6 to 8.
The Abingdon-Avon CUSD #276 district teaches almost 1,000 students. The high school has about 289 students. Their mascot is the "Tornadoes," and their school colors are black, green, and yellow.
There was once a school called Hedding College in Abingdon. It was open from 1855 to 1930. It was named after a Methodist Bishop named Elizah Hedding. The college later joined with Illinois Wesleyan University in 1930.
